Henri Grünbauer - Guitar
Jingle Bells 2017.
Merry Christmas to Y'all!
Uploaded 1 year ago
How long have you been playing?
Since I was a little boy. I started on Recorder, then Keyboard. I picked up the Guitar when I was 14 or 15.
What was the first concert you ever went to?
I think it was Rory Gallagher in about 1975 or 1976. I was with my friend Jitte Roosendaal, also a guitar player. We have been in a band together in the late 70s and early 80s after he taught me some stuff on the electric guitar. This was because I had started out on a classical guitar. Memorable of the concert where two facts: Rory played Million Miles Away, my favorite from Irish Tour and drummer Rod d'Ath crashed the bassdrumskin.
What gear do you use?
Fender Telecaster ('73) 3 pick-up & tremolo, Epiphone Sheraton II, Vox amplification, sometimes Marshall. Fender is good too. For spanish Guitar I used to have a Suzuki which got decapitated. Currently I have two Yamaha's, one for study and one for performing or recording, mainly due to issues of stringwear. in between the Japanese guitars there was an Korean nameless one, which worned out very quickly. For slide Guitar I use an Eko (Italian brand, I think) I have both 6 & 12 string versions. My Yamaki western is now with my eldest daughter, as is my Blue Sage Nomad electric which I used with the Kerozinekikkers. In the past I also owned a white Ibanez Les Paul (which was burned to death), a Standard Telecaster (I sold it), A Tele Thinline ('79) and A Mustang ('63), both got stolen from me. For Basses I have used a Maya Jazzbas, A Yamaha 1200s (some sort of endorsement-deal) and a '60s Red Hofner medium scale, which I gave away to my son, It was hard to get strings for the Hofner. Recently my best friend gave his fretless Washburn to me, I think it is from the late '70s or early 80s. For an amp, there was the Bassman 135, Which shared the fate of the Ibanez. Ever since I use a "Stage 100" Basscombo. I really don't know if that is a brand. For picks, I use Dunlops, the little purple ones. They are very heavy and give a glassy type of attack. I wear them out until I cannot hold them anymore. I don't lose my picks that often. It seems they keep coming back to me. For strings I use D'Addario almost exclusively. The nylons are the Pro Arte series (normal tension .28) and the steel ones .009 for the Tele and .010 for the Epi. I wear them out pretty well. Half way its life, I restring the 4th string (D) on the classical guitar reversed. I hardly ever break a string. I used to, but not anymore.
What are you looking for from Fandalism?
Music and Musicians, what else?
Who was your biggest musical influence growing up?
Probably my father, he was a church organist and thaught me the theoretical stuff. He gave piano- and organ lessons at home next to my babyroom he had build himself.
Are you in a band? Have you been in bands?
2017~onwards solo 2008~2016 Band of Victas (Rock&soul 60s onwards) (Guitar) 1999~2009 Kerozinekikkers (Rock/Funk/Jazz) (Guitar) 2002~2005 Orchestra "de Noordooster" Utrecht (Guitar) 1997~2005 conductor Schoolorchestra P.S. "De Koekkoek" Utrecht 1994~1999 Sound Advice (Rock+Soul) (Guitar, Vocals) 1993~present Classical Guitar on special request 1991~1993 Rockband "Poppenkast" (Bassguitar) 1990~1992 Court of Session (Jazz) (Bassguitar) 1989~1992 Blue Jeans & Black (Top 40, Guitar) 1988 Blaaskinkels (Boerenkapel, Guitar, Bassguitar) 1987~1988 The Soul System (Soul/Funk) 1985 Doeofjethuisband (Latin Rock) and Backfire (Hardrock) (Guitar) 1983~1986 and 1990~1992 Jezuz Kriziz (Bassguitar, guitar) (reli-punk) 1980~1984 Ska/Funk/Rock band Saint Vitus (Guitar) 1977~1979 Feedback (Hard-Rock) (Guitar) 1972-1976 Contemporary (Jazz/Blues/Pop), (Guitar)
If you could jam with anyone, who would it be?
Sly and Robbie because they are the coolest and the tightest
What's the biggest audience you ever performed to? What's the smallest?
The biggest audience was probably 400 or so. I don't really know, I didn't count them. The smallest audience was one bird. It started to participate.
You're stuck on a desert island and only get to bring one album with you. What do you pick?
Oh well... I'd have to study the artwork on the cover to pick a nice one. It'l probably an LP because it is bigger, presuming there's no electricity on the Isle. but if i may, i'd rather take my Spanish Guitar with me. If I can take a CD player with me: The six Paganini violin concertos. I heard the second one first when I had bought it. I had become just curious when I had read something about the man. Nobody seemed to have heard any of his music but a lot of people did have an opinion about him. So I decided to check him out. He was very different from the classical composers I already knew like Beethoven Handel Mozart Grieg Vivaldi and the Like. No thick harmonic plots, but very melodically inspired music which at times rather suggests harmonies. I liked that because it makes you hear music.
With the Kerozinekikkers at the 'Tom Okker Benefiet' -concert 2003.

Now this is an interesting pic! My friend Hans took it some 40 years ago before he emigrated to Australie. from left to right: Juan, at the time Feedback-bassist and my best friend from age 8 (he being 9) up until now, his then girlfriend Marian and Trees, Sister of then Feedback Singer Rene. In the background You spot Juan's brown VW-van. Probably he only picture in existence which shows this car in which we used to move around the band at the time. I remember Rene, Wouter and I playing cards in the back of the Van for money to pay for fuel. I should say the picture is from somewhere between 1976 up to 1978. In my memory Juan didn't own the VW (nicknamed the chocolade-bar) earlier than about 1976.

Okay my very own collection of picks : top left the ones I use for Guitar, I alternate between them to not wear out to fast like the third top left which has become to little to hold. Then two basspicks, the top right pick is thinny which I us for twelve string. The other picks are old, I only occasionally use to test sounds or whatever. Middle row right is a metal pick to get a metal on metal sound (how about that?) And below two Shark fins 40 years ago I had the skinniest sharkfin I had ever seen colored blood red. I don't understand how I ever could have played with those!

Marshall 2144 reverb, typical late 70s - early 80s gain control amp, probably one of the first models getting succes. There were two models of this amp: 2140 - no reverb and the 2144 with reverb, the latter one I had. It had 2xEL 34 giving 50 watts. I once played the 2150, the 100 watt version with a smaller but deeper housing. All nice amps but not quite delivering the rumble of a full stack or even a half stack.

Robert Moog's Lab Series L5 amp. From a time there was believe that There was no reason Most guitarists preferred Valve amps above Solid State ones. I kept dialing the controls to get the right sound, I finally sold it. The compressor, gain and frequency/midrange controls were nice features, though.

Melody Blue Sage Nomad Custom. An early 80's Made in Italy Guitar. It is customized with a Telecaster Rhythm Pu, Switched on/off with the master volpot and a Bill Lawrence L500 pu, which can be switched in humbucking or single coil mode or off. the master vol pot has a special capacitor wired to it that lets the high frequencies pass when the volume is down. The tone-pot (which can be switched off) can serve as a tone preset.

Marshall Channel switcher. A pedal with just one knob. It switches the pre-amp channels on the amplifier. Usually to change the sound from Rhythm (chords) to Solo (single string melodic playing) when a boost is needed. This pedal is very usable when playing festivals. There is a backline ready to plug in and most of the time they are Marshalls and the channel switcher is always missing. So I carry my own switcher with me, along with a guitar, a cord, a pick and a strap.

A later programmable digital delay, also by Ibanez. You could program 'chains' of delay-patches. It was hard to remember how many times to press before You got the patch You wanted. The best was to use only three patches:
1.Long delay
2.short delay
3.off

2. Far too much
In the 70s my friends said I sounded much better with it switched on. I thought I sounded better when it was switched of. After some months I had knocked all the sliders off and finally the foot-switch broke.

Feedback AKA Herrie&de Beukers 1982 Press Photo#2 When on request, Feedback resurrected itself in the form of "Herrie & the Beukers" All members had their own band: Jitte played Guitar in Frust (with Hans 'Blieb'), Jan & Rob were the Rhythm-tandem in Stress and Harry played Guitar in (Dutch) Saint Vitus. René was moving from one hardrock-outfit to another. Feedback or Herrie & de Beukers were more succesful then all those bands and were able to sell out the local venues, making the path free for starting acts.

Sound Advice, Park Transwijk Utrecht 1997. Sound Advice was founded around 1992 and put on hold in 1998. Their ever changing line-up didn't do any harm to a distinctive style which is recognized immediately. Between 1994 and 1996 they had a female singer. Some Sound Advice songs found their way in de Kerozinekikkers-setlist.

Kerozinekikkers, Maarssen Tom Okker Benefiet 2003. It is certain that when Rob Jaeger, former tenorsaxophonist dropped the name "Kerozinekikkers" (Fly Fuel Frogs) doubt's about a group name where non-existend ever since. A fact is that at the time he worked at an airport. When the group just started they played a composition with a Jumpy rhythm called "Kerozinekikkers". Sometimes the groups' name was spelled as "Kerozinekickers" and it was suggested that members would get a 'kick' out of inhaling Kerosene. However, this theory is not the most likely. In General, it is nowadays assumed that it comes to (Dutch) frogs that live in a kind of mixture of mud and kerosene. They are able to jump higher than any frog species and live through the most severe winters. As a matter of fact "Kerozine' is misspelled even in Dutch! Apparently in ten years, they never bothered to set that right.

Jezuz Kriziz Reunion Press-Photo 1990. Jezuz Kriziz knew two periods of existence, the initial period 1983-1986 and the reunion period 1990-1993. At the end of 1985 the most successful line-up of Nils Buis, Jitte Roosendaal and Harry Grünbauer broke up when Jitte decided to leave the band. 'Reunion Kriziz' contains the songs which were written during the reunion period, starting in 1990. The band eventually recruited Johan vd Zande as a drummer and In 1992, Kriziz morphed into 'Rockband Poppenkast', but that's another story. Harry Grünbauer left the band this time. 'Poppenkast' restarted with Rob Geerts on Bass and various other musicians.

Doeofjethuisband 1985, press-photo.'Doeofjethuisband' is Dutch and means something like 'act like if you are at home' Unfortunately this joke doesn't translate as funny. The right form of the verb 'to be' in dutch in the name of the band when you read it as a sentence is 'bent', which is phonetically the same as 'band'. I know jokes are never funny when they have to be explained, but well, we are not here to be joking anyway.

Feedback Live at Luilak 1979, 05:00 am Buitenveldert, Amsterdam. press-photo. Here we go back in time very far, when life was still simple. We are talking 1977 and real Dinosaurs might not have been around any longer and the electric guitar had already been invented. But there was a band with a heavy sound that sounded like a pre-historic monster: Feedback. Jan, René, Wouter, Stefan and Harry knew what Rock and Roll was.

Saint Vitus 1981, press-photo The characteristic Rock-Ska sound can't be found any better, anywere. The Band was founded November 15, 1982 by Bassist Peter De Bye and Guitarist Harry Grunbauer. With Erik-Jan de Wilde on Drums and Vocalist Stella Oelbers the first Line-up was completed.
Take That Bridge (1982) - The second album in the original line-up was also released on their own label Bounty Records and came after an excellent debut. Nonetheless a worthy straight ahead rock/ska follow-up album only Saint Vitus could produce.
1983 was a confusing year for Saint Vitus, Erik Jan left and further recording was done with Rob Puik and sometimes André de Jager on drums and percussion. Bounty Records released a C90 cassette from a single Concert with Stella and Erik-Jan still in the Band. Meanwhile, Hans van de Groenekan became a permanent member on Keyboards. However Rob and André were still under contract with a band called Stress, so for live-gigs, Frits Schotsman was hired as a drummer.

Contemporary as a Quartet, 1976. Very little is known about Contemporary. They were active sometime between 1972 and 1976. They had a mixed repertoire of blues, jazz, rock and even classical tunes. They did compose a few titles themselves, and it lookes like Otto Grünbauer was their main writer. In 1977 Stefan & Harry went on to form the legendary hardrock-formation Feedback after Otto had left the band. Some of the Contemporary-tunes found their way in the Feedback repertoire.

Bad Breaks (Solution Cover) - Blue Jeans & Black 1992. Solution was a originally instrumental Dutch band, in the 80s they had a sort of come back with their Bassist singing. I can hear your Heartbeat (Chris Rea Cover) - Blue Jeans & Black 1989. These last two uploads contrast very much with the last upload before them, the punk-jam in the old Gas Plant. These two in a way contrast themselves as well in a way as well. Here are two funk-guitar styles. Heartbeat has a more legato style and Givin it up has a more staccato style. If You play Heartbeat first followed by Giving' it up they are connected by two contrasting parts of a drumsolo.

Fly Away Jam - The Abandoned Gas Plant 1988. This was definitively the lowest point of my musical life and my life in general as well. I was arrested four times during the period, for stealing a bottle of vintage Wine (and drinking it with some ‘friends’), for drug possession and not be able to prove I had borrowed the Bike I had with me from a good Friend, for trespassing and for hoboing from Utrecht to Amsterdam were I lived with Yasin, a Somalian Musician refugee. He had just fired me from his band for the umpteenth time. I had no Job, no money and several of my Guitars were stolen. It was Francis, a classical Guitarplayer gone electric who invited me and my Vox AC 30 to a Jamsession in this abandoned Gasplant in Utrecht on New Years Eve 1988. I knew half the musician who were there to Jam and there were some others. I forgave basin for firing me and asked him to come as well. Francis said we could eat and drink so that was something to look forward to. I took my one Telecaster to the venue as well which was packed with basically all white punks on dope, so to speak. Around midnight I spotted Hans, a Bassplayer I had seen and heard a few times at the sessions. However I had never played with him before. I said let’s find a drummer and You know Francis right? He said: don’t worry, You’re in, I have it all mapped out. Francis had his souped up Fender Champ and his wooden pick along with his Telecaster, there was a drumset, a Peavey Bassamp, Peavey vocal pillars and of course my Vox. Hans had indeed mapped out things. He came up with a bass player and a drummer i did not know and he was going to sing himself. So we jammed about half an hour around midnight and I thought it sounded terrible but the atmosphere was quite relaxed. The jam was supposed to be a country song in E and by sign of hand we got up to A and back (or something like that). I was bad. I didn’t remember anything afterwards when Yasin came to me and said: ‘I heard Your solo, man, You’re in my band again!’ I said ‘what solo? I didn’t play one!’ Some Guy gave me a tape of the evening which ended on the shelves of Nutking Records (formerly Bounty Records) And I had to find out what solo Yasin was referring to. It is here at 4:12 in the Video but it was really Ben and Rob starting this band Blue jeans and Black who dragged me out of the Swamp I was in at the time. Mind You, this Jam isn’t for sensible ears, I was really gone to the Dogs at this point in Time, You can hear them bark at Me.

Can't take my Eyes off You (Frankie Valli Cover) - De Kerozinekikkers. I have added this bootleg quality recording as a bonus, De Kerozinekikkers started as a jazz-ensemble, then began to be recognised as a Jazz-fusion instrumental band developing a very funky sound and finally morphed into a top 40 cabaret-act. I lost all interest when I found out all originals were dropped from the setlist for a gig in Rotterdam.

Soap Opera Blues (Otis Clay Cover) - Blue Jeans & Black. I must admit at Times I watch TV constantly while practising my Guitar. However, I never watch Soap Opera's, I hate them! So I can relate to that with Otis Clay who wrote the Tune. The Band, again is Blue Jeans & Black. To add to the domestical atmosphere (we are watching TV) I try to imitate the sound of a singing teakettle in the solo at the end of the track.

Touch (Outsiders Cover) - Blue Jeans & Black 1989. The original Wally Tax and the Outsiders single was released in 1966. Blue Jeans & Black apparently tried to upgrade the tune with some 10 years, making it sound like a 70s performance. Drummer Ben is clearly the driving force behind this (then) new arrangement. And, despite it is a one take just to remind us how we should've played it (I can't remember any occasion were we did it) It has quite some energetic atmosphere making up for the hit and miss moments of this recording.

Everybody's Free to Feel Good (Rozalla cover) - Blue Jeans & Black. Rozalla is a Zimbabwean Singer who came at age 24 to London in 1991 and recorded the song to have a world-wide Hit with it. To be honest, I would never heard of it if I wasn't in this band who wanted to cover it. Although I hardly knew what to play at first when we performed the song, I gradually began to like it and this final arrangement still stands out, I guess.

Kriziz - Little Fridge (Bontan/Buis/Roosendaal) ©1991. This is the Studio-recording of this funny song, synced to the live-footage from their concert at the Free Floor on 25-01-1991. The Live audio was spoiled by some weird echo, making it unlistenable. The introduction and the applause at the end are from the actual concert. I doubt it wether the song was presented as an encore that night since it doesn't seem logical. In the recording of the full concert there seem signs, also in the audio that it is edited. The Lyric by the way, was written by the the 4 or 5 near old daughter of the singer. You can hear her in the a capella section at the end. Enjoy!

It is quite amazing it wasn't erased, since it is from the taping days. It is even more amazing it was mixed and digitalised around the turn of the century. But here it is, a Rolling Stones Cover... This song was first distributed through their E- Magazine 'De Kerozinekrant' as an mp3 single by De Kerozinekikkers in 2002. It also appeared on their CD 'Kwaak'. However, the song was much older, written in 1994 by Hans van Basten (who came up with the bass-riff and the chords) and myself, who wrote the words and arranged the Guitar-parts. When I had posted the acoustic version, I think it was Stig, a native English speaker, who said he never heard of the word "Tunch". A quick google learns us the word does not officially exist. However, I am pretty sure I picked the word up from some obscure American soul-artist, who's name unfortunately slipped my memory.

The song was, with a different bass-part to match the sound of the the group Sound Advice (1996) and again a different (acoustic) bass-part to match the sound of De Kerozinekikkers (1999), made suitable for their setlists. By the turn of the century the song was adapted to include parts for Violin and Flute. These parts were played by The Guitar-Twin in the all instrumental 2016 version. This new 2018 version has the original lyrics and only the short opening phrase done in twin mode. It also sports the energetic slap-bass part as per the 1995 version.

when I tell I play Guitar that’s when someone says
I Have a song for You I wrote so long ago
Can i hold it, to Show You how it sounds
It’s so emotional I was feeling so low
R.:
I said I don’t know what d’You want
work it out or just drop it here
Let us really lent our ear
Or do You want me just to give a hand
That’s when someone says I’ve one for sale
A real class axe really bucks the hum
Needs new strings but that’s about all
I’ll make a good price for a good chum
Then there’s this man saying he will help
He’s gonna legalise what I do
And says that ’ll make us lots of money
If You change this or that You’ll get the clue

Second Coming (Alice Cooper cover) 1971.
Second Coming is a song from the original Alice Cooper Band's album 'Love it to Death' It precedes 'Ballad of Dwight Free'. The Lyric seems to be about the Second Coming of Christ (or somebody who thinks he is Christ) an his observations of false Prophecy going on. The Video is edited in a way the instrumental parts are easy to follow in case You want to play the Guitar-part. Generally it is a one-take recording with the exception of a few additional bass notes along the bended notes in the Guitar-part. When I tried to play hem simultaneously, the extra tension caused by the bending resulted in de bass-notes dropping a quarter step in pitch, so I couldn't do that.

This song was a Sound Advice original. When Hans came up with some chords for me to play on the Guitar, I already had the lyrics. I can't remember why or when I wrote them or what they're about. Recently my Son told me about some Party he had with friends in the Woods which was so badly organised, they had forgotten they would need some light in the middle of the Night. Dutch Delta Blues - Henri Grünbauer ©℗2016.
When I discovered the Blues, I was already about 15 Years old and spent hours listening to Mississippi John Hurt, Libba Cotton and Doc Watson. This type of Delta picking I learned to play via tune like "Deep River Blues' "Powder Rag' and 'Freight Train'. In The Netherlands we too have a Delta at the Zeeland District, very different from the Mississippi Delta, but both Delta's inspired me to write this little tune. I play it on the Eko six-string. In preparation I had to shift the Guitar's neck-angle to get a playable action. During the recording I was trying to hypnotize the Cat which was making noises to spoil the recording. That explains the mad look in my eyes from time to time.

The Drums and Bass both took a session of a few hours, then I took two sessions to practice and complete the Guitar part and record it, meaning there is a studio version which I will put on soundcloud after some final mixing. But at that point I had no Video so I took the challenge to record a Guitar in one take. I is just what it is, Just Guitar, bass and drums, no rhythm Guitar, other dubbing or fancy video edits.

Kong! was composed when I played this Atari-game all the time. The first theme (which is only played once) is heard after the game starts up. It is the game where You have to climb stairs to rescue a princess. A monkey, who holds her, throws all sorts of things on your path. The music was composed for 'De Kerozinekikkers' who were working on a Jazz-repertoire at the time. Although the composition was finished and rehearsed, it was never performed live and there was never a recording other than a Notator-songfile on my Ataricomputer. It consisted of a melody, a bassline, drums and the chords, which is a rare keyboard part. The remaining notes stayed in my head for thirteen years and are finally properly recorded for the first time.

The Swinging Stranger (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©1999 ℗2016. The Swinging Stranger tells the story of a modern Troubadour who plays with local Musicians, since he came from very far it turns into a meeting of two different cultures. The local Musicians, the Drummer (who isn't visible in de Video), he Bassplayer and the Rhythm Guitarist provide a tight jazzy backing for the Stranger, who starts out with an exotic Melody. After this, the Local Guitarist plays a two voiced melody, representing a couple within the community. At one point in the melody three notes are ringing at the same time. This means a Child is born. The Stranger returns with his Melody, followed by an unisono Riff by the Stranger and the Locals. This provides a Frame for the Bass- and Drums-solo's. The Stranger dances to this, then returns to the Melody and a single string free form improvised solo follows. The Melody closes the Meeting.

Funky Rapture (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©1986 ℗2016. Funky Rapture is an instrumental track featuring melodic Guitar work and a percussion/drumsolo. Its origins came from latter Saint Vitus Rehearsals and after Saint Vitus disbanded the tune was a perfect set opener for De Doeofjethuisband, with its strong percussion section.

Cross Talk (Henri M. Grünbauer) ©2014 ℗2016. A relatively new tune, Cross talk is a Quartet work-out of an all Guitar demo. On the original the rhythm-guitar was already present. For this recording I played it again with a simplified structure. I hope You enjoy!

On My Way - Henri M. Grünbauer ©1979 ℗2016. On My Way is a '70s Blues-Rock style Party-tune. The first demo stems from early jam-sessions that led to the formation of Saint Vitus. In 1982 it was released on their first cassette-album with an updated beat to match with Contemporary disco music. In 1984 it was rearranged to fit the set-list of Saint Vitus II and carried on to the Backfire setlist. Sound Advice picked-up the tune around 1997 with a straight 16th beat as opposed to the original 12/8 beat. This new version re-introduces the original shuffle. Guitar-wise there's some slide melody and in the intermezzo I took care to clean up the rhythm guitar to do some fingerpicking accompaniment to an artificial flageolet style played melody that will catch the attention of the women, I hope.

Blues - Henri M. Grünbauer ℗2016.
This blues was recorded during warm-up for a recording-session, just to set the tone right. It is a one-take, mistakes and all!

Purple Rain (Prince cover) Blue Jeans & Black 1989.
On the third day of mourning over Prince' death the last of the three uploads of covers of his songs by Blue Jeans & Black. Purple Rain used to be the opening number in the first setlist and this particular recording was made during their very first gig. Unfortunately there's quite an amount of distortion on the vocals, but hopefully this doesn't spoil the listening to the music to much so it closes the three days of mourning in a respectful way...

Kiss (Prince cover) - Blue Jeans & Black 1992. Blue Jeans & Black played gigs primarily as a coverband from the end of 1989 to about 1992 with the very last gig after an hiatus in 1994. In total 150 to 200 gigs might have been played. Even in matters of Life or Death, the show had to go on. This ment sometimes we played with a replacement for one of the band members, most notably two gigs with a replacement drummer and about three with a replacement guitarist (named Berto). This was a matter of Life luckily because I had my Son born. Berto played the gigs and did a fine job. Meanwhile in the jamming circuit, another Guitarplayer named Gerrit had made-up this Bluesbeat version of Prince's "Kiss" and Berto had taken this version to Blue Jeans & Black and it was still on the setlist when I returned to play the following gig. So I knew Prince's tune allright and was instructed to play it in this blues kind of version. As You will understand I had no Guitar-arrangement ready for this and made it up on the spot. That is why You might notice I don't really have the plot before the second verse. Since what happens in the first verse is sort of listenable, I hope You have fun listening to one of the sloppiest examples of Guitarplaying available on the planet. And I hope his Royal Badness will forgive me.

1999 (Prince Cover) Blue Jeans & Black 1992.
When playing in Top 40 bands in the 80s and 90s, You couldn't get away without playing a Prince-song. Blue Jeans & Black had no less than three of them, of which this here 1999 was one. It was always a challenge to find the right parts to play on his tunes because the arrangements on the records are usually very tricky and cleverly mixed. Hope You enjoy this live-version. If You do more will follow in memory of one of the greatest!

One of a Kind was written for Sound Advice in 1995 as Quartet for Drums, Bass Guitar and Vocals. By the turn of the century the song was adapted to include parts for Violin and Flute. These parts are played by The Guitar-Twin in this all instrumental version.

Hard Times - Henri M. Grünbauer / Dirk van Burken ©1992 ℗2016.
Hard Times comes from the Legacy of Dirk van Burken's Hard-Rock trio Backfire. When Dirk died in 1986 I was his last Guitarplayer. This tune was based around a few notes I noticed he had written on a piece of paper. Just an idea for a song was worked out that afternoon and not before I learned he had gone, I finished the song which ended up on setlists of Sound Advice and the Kerozinekikkers between 1996 and 2006.

Why (Grünbauer / de Bye / van Burken) ©1980 2016℗.
Why was a ballad and a highlight of the (Dutch) Saint Vitus shows in the early 80s. As a ballad is style-independed it was taken over from the Funk-Rock formation by Hard-Rock formation Backfire in the mid 80s. The chorus of the song was revamped a bit but it retained the original chords for the solo section. Therefore, bass players from both bands deserve credits.
